Med School

As a regional medical center, Camden-Clark is recognized as a leader in quality health care. Now, thanks to a new program, it’s become a learning center too.

CCMH's partnership with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine has resulted in a host of new faces on the hospital's campus. Currently, a handful of third and fourth year medical students from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) are training at CCMH. That will increase significantly by the end of August.

WVSOM sends medical students to over 55 hospitals throughout West Virginia so they can complete their clinical rotations required for medical school. First and second year medical students stay on campus in Lewisburg, WV for classroom instruction and study from books; however, third and fourth year students require hands-on clinical experience. Through July, there will be five medical students in the area completing their clinical experience, and in August, that will increase to 16 medical students in the Parkersburg and Marietta area beginning their clinical rotations.

Strength in Numbers:
Wood County Relay for Life

By: Carmen Hathaway,
Senior Community Manager
American Cancer Society
The Relay For Life of Wood County is always a wonderful event. However, this year’s event could be described as a little more somber and emotional than usual. Our community, in its entirety gets involved in this event. Cancer has touched everyone, and it shows through the support of cancer survivors, family and caregivers at the Relay For Life.

This year we had a caregiver, Bill Packard, scheduled to speak at the Opening Ceremony. Just before, we had heard that Bill’s wife, Janet Packard, had taken a turn for the worse and consequently, Bill could not join us as he needed to be by her side. Our community leaders are not immune to this disease either, as just before Opening Ceremony we heard of a community principal who had been diagnosed earlier that day. Caregivers come in the form of family, friends and from our medical profession. For example, a caregiver can be both a friend and a community icon. This friend and community icon told me the day before the Relay that his dear friend had just been diagnosed with cancer and he wanted some information to read so that he could be a support to his friend.

A safe and healthy workplace

By Mike King

Camden-Clark’s decision to become a smoke-free facility later this year is really about providing a safe and healthy work environment for everyone.

CCMH, like many businesses, works hard to promote and maintain a safe working environment for employees, patients and visitors. And, while tobacco use is a personal choice, it is irresponsible for a healthcare institution to condone its practice in the face of the overwhelming health risks involved with its usage.
