Auxiliary Grant Scholarships Totalling $3,000
Pursuing a career in the health field paid off for three college students. The Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Auxiliary selected Benjamin Cook of Parkersburg, Laura Corathers of Mineral Wells and Kyle Sutphin of Vienna to receive the annual Leo D. Carsner Scholarship. Each recipient received a $1,000 scholarship.
The three students were recognized at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Luncheon held on May 2.
The selection committee selects recipients based upon several qualities the students possess such as scholastic ability, leadership attributes and potential contribution to the health care field.
Cook is a junior at Marshall University majoring in pre-med with a 3.8 grade point average. Cook accumulated over 2,800 hours as a teen volunteer at Camden-Clark in various areas throughout the hospital. Cook’s ambition is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Corathers is completing her sophomore year at Gannon University in Pennsylvania majoring in a 5-year Physician Assistant Program. Corathers carries a 3.9 grade point average, volunteers at a local hospital in Pennsylvania and has a part-time job.
Sutphin is completing his sophomore year at West Virginia University majoring in nursing. Sutphin carries a 3.4 grade point average and volunteered at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital’s emergency department.
The Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Memorial Auxiliary established the scholarship in 1990 to honor Leo D. Carsner. Funding for the scholarships is made available by a variety of Auxiliary projects. The scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s school.
This year there were eleven applicants. To be eligible, students must live in the area served by Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, which includes the 11 counties in West Virginia and Ohio, must have completed one year of college at an accredited school or be in the finals week of their first year.
